Steps towards a “climate first” business – Part 2

(Part 1 here).

Here’s a quick example of a service built like a new-but-simplified business, with a climate-first approach

You’re a photographer, and decide that you’re going to break off your headshot service as an experimental climate-first product.

  • You tighten up the scope to a 90 minute studio session.
  • You reduce the deliverables to something you can deliver by the end of the day – just the 10 best photos.
  • You create a fixed price for the service that people can buy and book online instantly.
  • You brand it “Headshot in a Day”.
  • And you document a step-by-step process to ensure you can easily deliver it in a single day – photoshoot in the morning; sort and retouch photos after lunch; deliver a Dropbox link by 5pm.

You’re still a photographer. You still have your photography business.

But now, you have this extra thing that is not only a great product to offer… it’s an asset. One that will help you earn money, as well as be worth money itself.

Great – but how is that climate first?

You experiment with things that might be too big for your whole business to tackle, but not so hard for this one service to try, such as:

  • Opening an account with an ethical bank, to take payments just for this service
  • Building the landing page for the service on green, renewable energy-powered hosting
  • Trim the waste by tightening up the scope (tick) and reducing travel time by keeping the whole session in your studio

Once you’re experimenting with this service, you can consider widening all your new climate-first practices to the rest of the business:

  • If you like the new ethical bank, switch all of the business banking over πŸŽ‰
  • If you like the green hosting, you can look at a larger project to migrate the whole website across, rather than just that one landing page πŸŽ‰
  • And continue looking for small improvements you can make (like tightening your scope) that minimise the impact and reduces the waste around your service πŸŽ‰

These are some of the steps you’ll go through if you sign up for the first Digital Asset Incubator, running in Feb 2024.

Signups will open in a few weeks, so drop your details in here to register your interest. This is not a commitment to buy, you’ll just receive a few extra (earlybird) emails about the Incubator.
