The Clean Creatives movement has been pushing for a "tobacco style" ban on fossil fuel advertising.
Sydney could be the first jurisdiction in Australia to actually do it.
The companies that would be banned from advertising are a complex mix. From the article:
"Comms Declare defined fossil fuel ads as those that promoted coal, gas and petroleum products, corporations that primarily produced fossil fuels, or organisations that generated more than 20 per cent of revenue from fossil fuels."
The range of companies goes from the obvious ones like Shell, Caltex etc, but they also give examples that include petrol-burning cars, through to gas-heated swimming pools.
"Insidious" is the word they used to describe fossil fuel messaging, saying we don't realise just how many fossil fuel messages we come across daily.
The motion was put to council last Monday - I imagine if it's passed there will be a bit of a hoo-ha. A few Melbourne councils are looking into similar bans, with hopes that the momentum will spread across the country.
