Every goal, target, path, objective, purpose, mission, and vision has a critical and unavoidable component: a next step.
When your goal is to become a climate-conscious organisation, your next step will be… any number of things really. Unique to you and your org.
The important thing is to take that step without stressing about the steps that will come after.
I love space stuff, so if there’s a chance to weave it in here I’m doing it: astronauts talk about the critical thinking that keeps them alive when they have limited tools, flashing lights and seconds ticking away up in space.
Rather than wallowing in very unproductive “I’m gonna die” narratives, they start fixing things one by one.
The speech by Matt Damon’s character at the end of movie The Martian is a nice summary (spoiler: he gets stuck on Mars but makes it back home). In the speech, he’s talking to new recruits about his survival and says “You solve one problem and you solve the next one, and then the next. And If you solve enough problems, you get to come home.“
Transforming our organisations is a long way from surviving a barren planet… Or is it 😉
What’s your next step?
