Superman / Batman

There’s one monumental difference between Superman and Batman (besides the human/alien thing):

👉 One came pre-packaged with superpowers, the other had to build them out of gadgets.

(Here’s the stretch where I attempt to connect this to business stuff, allowing me to justify writing about things I like in order to get my views on work across):

We’re not born with superpowers like Superman, we have to build them like Batman does.

…despite often hoping some magical force will just take over sometimes.

What I mean:

• We hope people will find our website – but we need tools like marketing, PR, and sometimes ads to expose it to the right people
• We hope people will just want to work with us – but we need to build trust and relatability with the people we want to work with
• We hope people will understand our offer – but we need copywriting to convey its benefits
• We hope clients will just know what happens next – but we need onboarding processes and communication strategies to keep them informed
• We hope that referrals will effortlessly sustain our business – but we need to be in regular contact with people to enhance our network of new connections, maintain friendships, and cultivate leads
• We hope happy clients will spread the word about the great work we did with them – but we might need to encourage them to do that for us, by explicitly asking them to

For some people, these things really are superpowers. I will never “work a room” like I’ve seen a handful of my mates do – that’s a true gift.

No, the rest of us need tools to help. And we need to use them as shamelessly as Batman does… maybe even hire a few Lucius Foxes to build those wizardly gadgets for us.

For superman, flying is natural. For Batman, it’s a thing he’s capable of doing.

Don’t expect everything to come naturally – build capability 👍
