This is encouraging – a combo of super science researchers agree that the globe can achieve 100% renewable energy by or before 2050.
The article cites a common objection you might have heard – that renewable energy components like solar panels and wind turbines, will need fossil-fuel-powered manufacturing plants to produce them. This paper apparently debunks that, plus lots of other objections. From the article:
“Major critiques against 100% renewable energy system research centre on energy return on investment (EROI) for renewables, variability and stability of the system, costs, raw material demand, and community disruption. These aspects are directly addressed, and it is shown that they are either a topic of the past, or that solutions exist so that none of these aspects should be regarded as a showstopper.”
The key phrase for me there is the last one – none are a showstopper. Sure there will be hurdles, but it’s unlikely to bring the whole plan crashing down.
