Quick Product Challenge

Almost everyone in a service-based business has at least one thing they can turn into a product.

Got 10 minutes?

Here’s a quick challenge: What’s something you do for your customers that takes a day or less?

It could be a whole project or task, such as:

  • Photographer: Taking their headshot and delivering the photos to their Dropbox
  • Copywriter: Writing the copy for a set of print ads
  • Web Developer: Integrating a cloud app to a website
  • Graphic Designer: Laying out a small magazine

Or part of a project, like:

  • Photographer: Scouting a location
  • Copywriter: Analysing past print ads for tone-of-voice
  • Web Developer: Cloud app recommendation report based on clients goals
  • Graphic Designer: Concept design for a magazine

Just a few examples, but all of these are paid services you could immediately add to your offerings.

Try this:

  1. List out all the stuff you can do that takes a day or less, and pick one you like
  2. Write down what you’d include, and what you’d exclude to ensure it didn’t take more than one day
  3. Consider who’s bought this from you in the past and what it might be worth to them
  4. Set a fixed price for it

Try not to price it based on the time it takes you… pricing is hard so I’m really oversimplifying it for the sake of a challenge. Try to imagine products you’ve seen around the web, come up with a 3-figure or 4-figure price, and see how it feels.

Eg, following the steps above:

  1. Taking headshots
  2. Includes 20 photos; Uploaded to Dropbox by 5pm; In studio only; One outfit; 45 min session. Excludes multiple-locations, multiple outfits, hair and makeup, etc.
  3. For corporates with a high visibility profile
  4. $499.

Hammer it down on paper, and see how it feels.
