Offence vs Defence

When I started playing offence, my defence got better.

Think of running a business like a game… because it’s supposed to be fun, right? 😜

(Side note: The Simon Sinek school of thought with the Infinite Game is powerful – we don’t play to “win” in business, we just want to keep playing as long as possible – but let’s just think about landing clients and making money as wins for now.)

When I’d create a new product, some of the worries I’d have were things like “what if someone cancels, or requests a refund?”.

Good question, but here I am already playing defence before I’ve even run onto the ground.

The times when I pushed myself to just build the product, and worry about the problems when they came up… I was actually better equipped to deal with the problems when they did come up.

Because they were real problems. Not something my imagination came up with.

To stretch the sports analogy… great teams and players always have defensive strategies, but defence alone doesn’t score points.

For self-employed creatives, normal business traps are easy to fall into and overcomplicate things - but they’re totally avoidable when flying solo.
