I just spotted a BYD Atto 3 on the road.
No idea what I'm talking about? It's a nifty little electric SUV, available in Aus now starting at a fraction under $45k.
Small, although the use of it's very flat and very slim "Blade Battery" means there's a lot more room inside than you might expect.
The EVs are definitely coming - BYD will have at least 3 models available from next year, and the reviews are consistently high from review sites like Car Expert.
According to energymatters.com.au, there are currently 31 EVs available in Aus, and 2023 will see that number more than double. With prices ranging from $40k - $350k, hopefully the increased options will mean the entry price will also drop.
BYD, Polestar and a number of other EV automakers are also tapping into sustainable sourcing of raw materials for the interiors and other parts, rather than making everything from virgin materials. Overall, this sector is really starting to step up, which could mean an accelerated (pun intended) move away from petrol.
Cars are only as green as their fuel though, so the big championship win will come when we're topping these up with renewable energy. Plugging into the fossil grid doesn't do much to drop the overall energy footprint, but it does reduce the car's own emissions to zero, which is still a win.
