Easy vs Simple

Easy means without effort.

Simple means without complication.

Not the same 😉

For many years, my work was relatively "easy" (meaning my tasks were things I had been doing for many years on rinse-and-repeat), but the business itself was not simple.

Running a solo creative business can be so flipping complicated.

That is, until you uncomplicate it.

Things that made it complicated included:

• Having lots of offerings
• Having no particular specialisation
• Having slightly different hourly rates for different clients
• ...meaning invoicing each month was a draaaag
• Hiring extra hands to lighten the load
• ...which it didn't do, it just added different stuff to my plate
• ...on top of what was already there
• Trying to market my work, which I could never clearly define
• Never quite knowing how much of anything I needed to sell
• ...which meant I said "yes" to almost any project that came my way

Over the years, things I changed to simplify it included:

• Having fewer offerings
• ...for fixed prices
• ...and doing away with hourly rates
• Putting more time into creating processes
• ...rather than thinking a new hire would help - that failed every time I tried it
• Timeboxing not just my tasks, but entire offerings
• ...by only offering things I could deliver in eg: 1 day, or 1 week
• Knowing how much I needed to sell of each offering, and using that as a target
• Plus more...

It does require focused work, a good amount of patience, and sometimes a little guidance.
