Business plans need a shake up

I believe recycling and waste management is going to be a disruptive industry this decade.

Quick numbers:

  • Australia produces around 3 million tonnes of plastic in a year.
  • Less than 12% is recycled.
  • 95% is discarded after one use.

Dealing with waste will be a big thing.

Suggestion:

By 2030, business that make stuff should have more responsibility for what happens to the stuff they make, eg:

  • No business - new or existing - should be allowed to manufacturer products without a plausible end of life plan for each product it produces.
  • Models like drop-shipping (where anyone with a laptop can run an online store using a wholesaler to pack and ship products) should be made to follow the same rules.

Harsh? 😉
