I watch various sports as often as I can—it's one thing I'll allow myself to stay up even later than usual for.
Something I often notice is who's sponsoring the teams I support.
Sometimes there's a good surprise, like discovering that the ethical bank Beyond Bank sponsors the Sydney Kings.
But every time I watch the Swans play, the Origin Energy logo in the background makes me cringe (Origin are the 4th largest climate polluter in Australia).
Netball Australia recently rejected a $15m sponsorship deal from Hancock Prospecting (Gina Reinhardt's mining company 🤢) which, when I read about it, made me think "awesome, finally, the teams are pushing back".
Honestly, I can't begin to imagine how hard it must be to say no thank you to sponsor cash.
But if teams can fill that gap with more ethically-aligned sponsor money, they can become billboards for companies they actually like instead of plugging companies who need whatever tv coverage they can swing.
