Awesome things

The concept of offsetting grates me on a couple of levels:

It makes people believe, for real, that they’re truly compensating for the emissions they create.
The offsetting program–if legitimate, which is often not the case–is doing something awesome, like reforestation or growing a kelp shoreline… which are important projects anyone can contribute to anyway, but the only reason they do is to “offset their emissions”.

I say contribute to the awesome thing anyway if you really want to, but do the hard, truly impactful work of genuinely reducing your emissions.

Funnily enough, things like switching banks is actually one of those truly impactful emissions-reducing acts, and will likely have a bigger impact than buying offsets.
