USP / CA / PoD ≠ UA™

After a tidal wave of positive feedback and blown minds from my podcast interview with Dr. Genevieve Hayes, she decided it was worth inviting me back for a second round.

Completely unfazed by the fact that every one of her guests does a second interview, I accepted - and we discussed the idea of your Untouchable Advantage™.

And I'm sure you've heard of a USP - your "Unique Selling Point", or your Competitive Advantage, or your Point Of Difference - and it might seem like I'm just re-labelling something that already exists, and attempting to pass it off as thought leadershit.

But I believe there's a fundamental difference between the three marketing exercises listed above, and your Untouchable Advantage.

In a nutshell: a USP, CA or PoD is often (but not always) manufactured in some way. Things like Domino's "Delivered in 30 minutes or it's free" is something they came up with to stand out from other pizza and fast food outlets, and had to put effort into holding up that unique difference.

An Untouchable Advantage however, is baked right into your DNA... which fortunately for us soloists, is far easier for a soloist to tap into than an organisation (though not impossible).

Things like your upbringing, cultural influences, and taste in music are oddly relevant to how you show up in business.

It's especially powerful if you're a Company of One... or as I discuss with Genevieve, in a salaried role where you may find yourself having to advocate for your own career opportunities.

We bounce between soloists and employees a few times in this (shorter) episode.

For self-employed creatives, normal business traps are easy to fall into and overcomplicate things - but they’re totally avoidable when flying solo.
