Social media triggers my allergies.
Many introverted types I’ve mentioned this to respond with their own version of it. Networking events, conferences, even Christmas parties – they all trigger sensitivities in me that make me instinctively want to avoid them.
Which is weird…
Because I like people.
And I like talking to them.
And if they’re a business owner – particularly a solo one – and I get to talk to them about that, suddenly I’m in my happy place and could easily spend hours there.
We all have nerd-out topics – talking business with a business owner is mine. Seriously – HOURS.
So I try to approach social media, events, and general “networking” as opportunities to nerd-out.
On socials (I use LinkedIn), it’s harder. For one, LinkedIn users expect that a DM from a random is probably going to involve a sales pitch.
Which means getting a DM that doesn’t do that, probably just seems awkward and weird. Can’t win.
But faced with the choice I prefer to be awkward, so I do my DMing when I don’t have anything to sell (and just own the awkwardness).
And I get to nerd out with some genuinely cool people… some of them become clients.
I’m going through more of this next Thursday in the Solo Selling Workshop (today’s the last day for earlybird).
