Say it with me: I can’t be all things to all people ๐ this is ok.
When you’re flying solo, it just doesn’t make sense to jump around from market to market, big client to small client, enterprise to startup, photoshop to wordpress to figma to obsidian, digital ads to photography to websites to copywriting.
If you love the variety and love the fun, are genuinely are building a one-person show that can do it all, while making happy money and never get burned out – teach that. You’re onto a rare thing that few have truly figured out.
For the rest of us, it’s pretty fun for a while.
Then at some point you realise you actually don’t love late nights; you don’t love surprise texts and calls from clients; you don’t love checking in on weekends; you don’t love taking your laptop away on holidays because “you’ve built a freedom business” – in truth, you can’t even take a day off while on holidays because everyone knows your laptop is tethered to your hip, and you simply don’t bother with the OOO autoresponder anymore.
Fun for a while, but far from sustainable.
Instead:
Pick the handful of services you’re good at, have delivered lots of times, know pretty much how long it’ll take, and can slap a price-tag onto.
Document the process around how you deliver them – from sale to onboarding to delivery to follow-up.
Calculate how many you need to sell to hit an income goal (this’ll change as your products evolve – start with “income goal version 1”).
Understand what you wouldn’t compromise on when you deliver these services (hint: that’s your guarantee).
Focus on those handful of services in everything you do.
Will you be stuck doing only those services forever? Of course not.
You’re building a shortcut so folks can see with full clarity exactly what you do, but on top of that… yours will likely be the only one where they can also instantly see the price, the timeline, the guarantee, and the buy button.
Be selective – it’s hard. You won’t figure it out in five minutes, but just about anyone can do it.
If you want to figure this out in a day, book a 1-day workshop with me here (and potentially make your whole investment back with your first sale, just sayin’ ๐).
For self-employed creatives, normal business traps are easy to fall into and overcomplicate things - but theyโre totally avoidable when flying solo.
