“Little Old Me” vs Impending Doom

A soloist wanting to impact the climate of the planet.

The scale is laughable:

What can this clown possibly do that would impact something so impossibly massive?

Quick sidetrack: Think about the Michael Jordan era – although he was massively influential in his team winning 6 championships (enormous feat), he didn’t win them on his own.

It’s not so much the individual contribution, but the whole team that pulls the win together.

Look at these numbers:

  • There are 2 million self-employed crazies in Australia
  • 20 million in Europe
  • 30 million in the US
  • In Aus, we have close to $4 trillion (with a t!) sitting in super
  • And another $4 trillion just in the big 4 banks

And now imagine:

  • Every self-employed crazy said ‘no’ to doing work that advances climate-harm – as in, no car ads, no work for airlines, no Shell & BP clients, saying no to doing work that amounts to greenwash, and more covered on the Creatives for Climate website (check out their Anti-Greenwash Guide for how-tos)
  • Plus, they all moved their super to an ethical fund (where it no longer funds fossil fuel projects)
  • And moved their money to an ethical bank (ditto)

I’m not saying every soloist is going to do this (although heaps are)…

But the thought of more and more following this path, and more and more being first in their corner of the world to do so, leading the way for others to follow… it’s how packs of small critters like us can start to overwhelm some very large opposition.

We acknowledge that we work on Wangal land of the wider Eora nation now known as Sydney. Wangal land sadly no longer inhabits any Wangal people.

We pay respect to the Elders of the past, as well as current and emerging Elders of surrounding lands and beyond. Let's all care for Wangal land, the Eora nation and Country.

For self-employed creatives, normal business traps are easy to fall into and overcomplicate things - but they’re totally avoidable when flying solo.
