Bcorp is under fire for allowing agencies working with fossil fuel companies to achieve Bcorp status.

ESG is intended to measure the pace at which a company moves away from polluting activities and fossil fuel dependence, but it often has no effect on that measure at all.

Measuring an organisation’s carbon footprint often leads to a purchase of offsets, 90% of which have been proven to be useless and in some cases, actually add to the climate problem.

Everything above leads to a certification of some kind… But what’s the point if the credibility of that certification is shot, it has zero effectiveness, and you just burned time and money to attain it?

Shell, BP, Total and Equinor have announced plans to reach “net zero” emissions by 2050, but few have committed to halt fossil-fuel exploration.

I know you’re not Shell, but consider this:

Instead of certification, why not go do some—or all—of the decarbonisation work yourself?

I know how complex that sounds.

…but switching banks is decarbonisation. Using a local supplier instead of an overseas one is decarbonisation.

A lot of everyday stuff done a little differently can compound to a megatonne of decarbonisation.

Right now, certification seems to be more distraction than action.
