As I work my way through various parenting books, podcasts and Instagram reels trying to get a handle on life with a toddler, I find myself picking up tricks that apply in other areas of work and life.
One of my most recent tools when fending off a left-hook or dodging a flying toy is to say to him “Woah, that’s ouchy… what could you do instead?”.
Amazingly, most of the time, he gives me a hug… or a pat (we also have cats, so I think patting and hugging all fall into the same bucket of affection at the moment).
When your organisation is being a bit naughty—maybe it’s being wasteful with marketing, or overly extravagant with an event, or lazy with supplies and resources, or only seeing dollar signs when signing on a sketchy new client—try asking:
“What could we do instead?”
For self-employed creatives, normal business traps are easy to fall into and overcomplicate things - but they’re totally avoidable when flying solo.
