The Super Simple Climate Pledge

If you’ve got the itch to start doing good with your organisation, but no actual “good” to show yet, this super simple Climate Pledge template might help you get things rolling.

  1. Create a new page on your website called “Our Impact”
  2. If you’re doing / have done climate-positive things like installed solar panels, converted to compostable packaging, or switched to an ethical bank, list each thing under its own simple heading, eg: “Banking”, then a paragraph or two about why you switched (if you’re not sure if an action you’ve taken qualifies as climate-positive, reply and let’s e-chat)
  3. If you haven’t done climate-positive stuff yet, list everything you’d like to achieve in the next 5-7 years (or sooner) under it’s own heading. For example, “Electricity”: We plan to switch to fully renewable rooftop solar by 2027.
  4. If you don’t know what you’d like to achieve in the next 5-7 years, but know you want to do something, use this paragraph:

We’re committed to reducing our impact on the climate over the next 5-7 years, in line with the first climate emissions reduction deadline of 2030. As we take steps towards our impact goals, we’ll update this page – please check back regularly.

Your whole impact page can be that one paragraph – it’s simply a commitment, not a report (yet!).

So if all you have right now are good intentions, this thing is a placeholder while you get your climate action rolling.

ps. I’ve got a modest target to get 100 Australian organisations to make a super simple Climate Pledge in 2023. If you do this, would you mind sharing a link to your impact page with me so I can feature it in a future post?

And if you know of businesses you could forward this email to, I’d love to feature their impact pages too.

For self-employed creatives, normal business traps are easy to fall into and overcomplicate things - but they’re totally avoidable when flying solo.
