100% is hard

100% in anything is hard.

Dominos’ famous “delivered in 20 minutes or it’s free” line committed to on-time delivery, while also admitting it wasn’t likely to happen every time (that promise is still in place, though it’s hilariously different today).

100% net-zero emissions–especially today where we just don’t have all the options yet–is basically impossible.

Is it still worth shooting for, even knowing you may never reach 100%?

Let’s frame the question:

  • Did you still sit tests in school, knowing it was unlikely you’d get 100%?
  • Did you still take shots on goal, even though it was unlikely you’d get 100% of them past the goalie… or even on target?
  • Did you still show up for a job interview, knowing there was a chance you wouldn’t get the job?

100% is rarely the expectation, but it is often the target. We don’t give up knowing 100% won’t be achieved, we use 100% as the lure to get us as close to it as possible.

  • 80% in a test is great. 50% might be good enough too!
  • 11 shots on goal resulting in 4 saves, 6 misses, and 1 goal might win the game.
  • 3 interviews you didn’t pass might (hopefully) result in learnings you can take to future interviews.

100% net-zero emissions is unlikely to happen for many, many companies.

Sit the test. Take the shot. Show up for the interview.

Use 100% as a lure, not as a reason to quit… or to never even try.
