Beyond the carbon footprint

Think it’s time for a shake up.

Crumbling carbon credit credibility (say that 3 times!), claims of carbon neutrality is generally B.S., questionable apps that let you “offset” everything from your pets to your breath…

I think it’s time we all take a pause.

We’re all adults here, and climate is one system we probably shouldn’t be trying to game.

One of the main reasons we even measure our carbon footprint is to know how much money we need to spend to offset it.

Offsetting is being used as an instead-of-reducing-actual-emissions system. Some companies intend on stopping there, while others are using offsets as an interim step until they can reduce emissions completely.

If you install solar and no longer rely on fossil power, there’s nothing left to measure. You’ve taken the best step possible, and can pretty much tick that off your to-do list.

Soon enough, there’ll be enough options for us to skip the offsets altogether (and the headache of measuring) and jump straight to emissions reduction.

Time to think beyond a carbon footprint we can offset, and towards genuinely smarter reduction options.
