Questioning suppliers

I had to buy a USB cable this week and came across an electronics brand that manufactures cables, speakers and other small electronics from either recycled, or sustainably sourced materials.

I read every part of the box and loved what I saw. An electronics manufacturer actually thinking about it’s impact. Awesome.

One claim one their packaging raised a big question for me though:

“{Our company} has no carbon footprint”.

My instant reaction was:

  • Ok… either they’re offsetting;
  • Or they’ve found a way to do everything with literally no carbon output (unlikely);
  • Or it’s bullshit.

So rather than let my cynicism come to a flawed decision, I just asked:

I bought the cable anyway – it was the best option on offer when measured against my values. That immediately made them a part of my supply chain (and me theirs).

But that line bugged me and I had to know about it.

When companies make a claim that makes your Spideys tingle… ask the question.
