Resolution revival

There are A LOT of people out walking along my almost daily route today, remarkably more than other days.

It’s just a guess, but I reckon there are a bunch of “get in shape” resolutions kicking off this morning, which got me thinking about resolutions in general.

I’ve mostly stopped making new years resolutions because I know if it’s just something I dream up optimistically on NYE, it won’t stick, I usually go too lofty or too superficial.

That said, there’s something irresistible about starting fresh on Jan 1.

So instead of making new resolutions, this year I’m opting to go harder on the commitments I’ve already made.

The book Atomic Habits mentions (I don’t recall exact phrasing) something about creating a plan of action for whatever you’d like to achieve, rather than just saying it once and expecting it to stick.

Things I’ve committed to already have a plan of action, so adding something new is only likely to derail existing commitments.

One of my big ones this year is to complete the entire BCorp application process, whether it’s successful or not. The process is pretty intense, I committed to it in 2022, and realistically I’ll only have so much capacity for big commitments like this which will likely take a significant slice of the year to get through.

If I plan to truly stick to a resolution for the best part of a year, my best shot is reinvigorating one I’m already mentally prepared to be at for a solid year.

Did you commit to something last year that fizzled towards the end, but is still a big important goal to hit?

If you haven’t made your 2023 commitments yet, maybe consider reviving that one… Reduce reuse recycle, right? 😜
