7 million Christmas trees

How about this for a sustainable Christmas business idea:

  • Grow real Christmas trees in pots from seedlings.
  • Instead of selling them, rent them out in December.
  • Take them back in January.
  • For a nice touch, allow people to rent the same tree again next year.
  • When the tree reaches full maturity, plant it in a forest and allow it to sequester carbon for the rest of it’s life.

Benefits?

  • A great alternative to fake trees.
  • A great alternative to buying a real tree then throwing it out – apparently in the UK, more than 7 million Christmas trees get binned every year.
  • Each tree gets to see more than one Christmas.
  • You increase the number of trees overall, rather than reducing them.
  • Your busy period is only a couple of months per year.

Like the idea?

It’s the exact thing London Christmas Tree Rental in the UK are doing – and as far as I can see, no one in Aus is doing it quite the same way.

If you know someone who could replicate the idea here please pass this on to them – I’d LOVE to see this happening in Aus.
