Tipping point signals

The other day I talked about tipping points that move products or ideas from early stages into mass adoption.

Not sure if this is a tipping point, but I spotted what I might call a tipping point signal last night while planning a road trip, check it out:

You can highlight all the EV charging points along your trip.

Personally I don’t own an EV (yet 😉) so I don’t know how long this option has been available on Google Maps… but the fact you can search for charging points on there seems significant.

I can only imagine that the numbers that would lead to Google adding a feature like that must be decent.

Aussie EV sales in 2022 so far only sit at 2.7%, but the year-on-year jumps in sales have been pretty big.

Of the ~1 million cars sold annually in Australia, the number of EVs sold in:

  • 2012 was 253
  • 2015 was 1,771
  • 2018 was 2,216
  • 2022 so far is 21,771 👈 (close to a 1,000% jump in 3 years)

So we’re not technically at the 5% tipping point yet, that feels like it’s fast approaching.
