5 year plans… I don’t really believe in them.
Not in a “they’re bullsh*t!” wannabe-contrarian kinda way, but I genuinely believe it’s impossible for most people to literally plan the next 5 years of their business, especially if it’s a new business.
I definitely have aspirations for where I’d like to be business-wise in 5 years, but the path I’ll take to get there is fluid. I know some of what I’ll do this year, but zero clue what I’ll be doing next year.
If I wrote a 5 year plan today, I guarantee 100% that I wouldn’t follow it.
It’s like asking someone to plan the first 5 years of their unborn child’s life – how can you plan for someone you’ve never met?
On the other hand, aspirations give you distant goal posts to aim for, without being so rigid and prescriptive on how you’ll get there.
My 2 main aspirations are 1) to work a 3 day work week, ideally by selling productised services and coaching (which are themselves productised services currently), and 2) to be more climate-positive each year than the previous one.
As for the plan? Aside from getting the first few services launched in the first half of 2024, I don’t really know yet.
Ask me next year π
