40hrs/week vs 40hrs/month

Let’s say you’re a designer with 3 clients, each on a $2500/month retainer.

While the money could be better, it’s ok – but your time is completely maxed. You’re working nights and weekends, often have overlapping deadlines, holidays are impossible – there’s just no space to come up for air, let alone add income.

Now… let’s say you develop JUST ONE $500 fixed-price product that you can deliver, start to finish, in around 2-3 hours.

Suddenly, this is possible:

  • Selling just 5 of them per month replaces one client
  • It takes you 15 hours total, with no scope creep
  • You free up time for yourself, for existing clients, or…
  • To sell 5 more, and replace one more client
  • Which will take 30 hours total per month…
  • Then 5 more…

You can see how in this example, one single product could potentially reduce your total work time to around 45 hours per month, rather than 40+ hours per week, for the same income.

That’s before you factor things like increasing the price over time, or stacking related offers around that one product.

Obviously this is over-simplified maths, and doesn’t factor things like your marketing and sales time… because they’re table stakes. If you’re not spending time on marketing and sales already, it might explain the quiet periods…

I’ve never claimed to have a million-dollar magic bullet… just some simple ideas to make work more fun and a little easier.
